It's not a particularly great game, but it's got a cool setting, some neat puzzles, and interesting boss fights. For that reason, to understand Kain's motivations in Defiance (that are not actually spoken of in the game, but implied), it's best to play Blood Omen 2 AFTER SR2. The game is basically a sequel to Defiance that takes place in an altered timeline created by the events in Soul Reaver 2. It's a steampunk action game with a Legacy of Kain slapped onto it. It is a direct sequel to SR2.īlood Omen 2 gets a lot of hate, and many of the criticisms are deserved. To compensate, the gameplay's painfully linear, and mandatory combat encounters are a chore you get through.ĭefiance is a good mix of both exploration in wide linear levels and an actually somewhat deeper combat system, that wraps up most of the story beats. Soul Reaver 2 is where LoK story goes from "pretty good" to GOAT. Running past enemies is generally your best strategy, since there's no benefit in fighting them, ever.

And it has a very clunky combat system, where you're basically timed on killing enemies, and if you don't he'll come back to life. Also, camera controls are pretty awful, so expect a lot of dumb deaths. Do be warned, there's A LOT of block puzzles. Soul Reaver is the most engrossing 3D game, as it hits a sweet spot between its atmospheric story-telling and it's exploration-based gameplay. It's a one of a kind atmospheric "dark Zelda" game that has not been matched in over 20 years.

Soul Reaver HD Remaster does not yet have a release date.Blood Omen 1 is a masterpiece, which is why not having an easy way to purchase it digitally on PC is a travesty.

It's been delisted from Steam, but a key can still be purchased from Square Enix's online store. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is currently available on Microsoft Windows.
